While the USS Monitor fought the Merrimac the Union Army
could hear the gunfire from the shores nearby.
Still in the vicinity after their February 8 battle at Roanoke Island,
North Carolina, the 9th New York Hawkin's Zouaves could hear
the battle of the Monitor and Merrimac at Hampton Roads.
Two lithographs of "Stonewall" to the left and
"Sallie" on the
right show army mascots in action.
Stonewall is entertaining the troops with his carved wooden pipe;
while Sallie stands by the Union flag.
Mascots were courageous friends of the troops who guided,
protected and entertained them during the loneliness and
terror of war.
John prepares his new recruits for winter with the light
blue
great coat. The wool great coat is worn over the wool
uniform jacket. These Vivandiere recruits will be taking
taking care of the sick members of the unit.
John holds back his recruits as he introduces the Confederate
grey.
