Immaculate Heart of Mary teacher, Bill Mason, and Sister
Theresa
join the instructors at the display tables. Bill Mason, George, John,
Arthur and Janice are all members of Oliver Tilden Camp No. 26,
Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. George and Bill are past
Commanders of this historic organization and John is its present
Commander. Janice is a member of the organization's women's auxiliary.
The original veterans of the Civil War were members of the GAR -
Grand Army of the Republic. As the number of Civil War veterans
declined, the SONS of Union Veterans of the Civil War was
founded in 1881. The Sons originally assisted the GAR and were
appointed by the elderly soldiers to carry on
their memory.
The Sons of Union Veterans support the efforts of The
Greenpoint Monitor Museum to keep alive the memory of the
USS Monitor, its designer, John Ericsson, and the Monitor's crew.
Arthur points out the historic badges of the Veterans of
the
Grand Army of the Republic and the Sons of Union Veterans
of the Civil War. After the war the Civil War, the veterans sponsored
events and programs to raise money for the orphans of the Civil War.
They took Old Abe the Eagle with them to these events.
Today the SONS of Union Veterans of the
Civil War keep alive the memory of these gallant men.
