The heart and soul of the Civil War soldier is brought
to life
through music and song.
Arthur's piccolo recorder resounds the echoes of their march.
The songs, accompanied by guitar, tell the story of the
soldiers
as they remembered their families who were far away at home.
Arthur displays an artillery shell fragment.
Arthur speaks about his great grandfather, Ernest Wagner,
who fought in the Civil War with Company H, 13th New Jersey Volunteers.
Ernest Wagner came to the United States from
Germany in 1855
and volunteered to fight in the Civil War.
Civil War poetry and song tells the story of gallant men like these
who risked their lives for this country -
and FOR MANY THEIR NEW COUNTRY.
Arthur leads and
the Class follows along
with a chorus of "Hurrah" "Hurrah"
to the tune
"When Johnny Comes Marching Home"
written by Patrick S. Gilmore in 1863.
"When Johnny comes marching home again, hurrah,
hurrah,
We'll give him a hearty welcome then, hurrah, hurrah,
The men will cheer, the boys will shout,
The ladies, they will all turn out,
And we'll all feel gay, when Johnny comes marching home.
And we'll all feel gay, when Johnny comes marching home.
The old church bell will peal with joy, hurrah, hurrah,
To welcome home our darling boy, hurrah, hurrah;
The village lads and lassies say,
With roses they will strew the way,
And we'll all feel gay, when Johnny comes marching home.
Get ready for the jubilee, hurrah, hurrah,
We'll give the hero three times three, hurrah, hurrah,
The laurel wreath is ready now,
To place upon his loyal brow,
And we'll all feel gay, when Johnny comes marching home."
Students examine Civil War firearms.
