George, a graduate of PS 110, starts off the show.
He learned about the USS Monitor at PS 110 just like
his grandmother, mother and father. They also were
graduates of
"The Monitor School".

The USS Monitor was not built on Monitor Street
as some people mistakingly think,
but at the old "Continental Iron Works" which used to
be on West and Quay Street at the
Bushwick Inlet and the East River in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
The USS Monitor was launched from this location on
January 30, 1862.

George thanks Class 5-402 and Class 5-403 for
their help in writing letters so that The Greenpoint Monitor Museum
can save this historic location for the Museum's future home.

Class 5-402, Class 5-403 and
The Greenpoint Monitor Museum also thank
The National Trust for Historic Preservation for
placing our story on their website shown below.

This will be a place where children can learn about the USS Monitor,
its gallant crew, the men who built it and the man who designed it -
Swedish immigrant, JOHN ERICSSON.

JOHN ERICSSON was a Swedish immigrant who helped save
the Union with his invention the USS MONITOR.
When John Ericsson left his home in Sweden he first lived in England.
In 1829, while in London, England, John Ericsson designed a
steam powered fire engine. His fire engine was pulled by horses and had
a steam powered boiler which pumped water through a hose.

Over the years the steam fire engine was improved and
no longer required horses.
The steam power enabled the fire engine to both move and pump water.
George demonstrates how a steam fire engine works.
This little fire engine has a steam boiler. When the
water in the boiler is heated, steam is created which
powers the fire engine and makes it move.
