Arthur speaks about his great grandfather, Ernest Wagner,
who fought in the Civil war with Company H, 13th New Jersey Volunteers.
Ernest Wagner came to the United States from
Germany in 1855.
The gun Arthur is holding is the type of gun his great grandfather used.
It is an original 1862, 58 calibre, British Enfield Rifle Musket.
Arthur points to his membership badge of the Sons of Union
Veterans of the Civil War and a reproduction badge of the
13th New Jersey Infantry (his great grandfather's regiment).
Arthur brings to life the days of the Civil War through
poetry and song.
"Civil War" a poem by Charles Dawson Shanly
is one of his favorites.
Arthur leads and
the Class follows along
with a chorus of "Hurrah" "Hurrah"
to the tune
"When Johnny Comes Marching Home"
written by Patrick S. Gilmore in 1863.
"When Johnny comes marching home again, hurrah,
hurrah,
We'll give him a hearty welcome then, hurrah, hurrah,
The men will cheer, the boys will shout,
The ladies, they will all turn out,
And we'll all feel gay, when Johnny comes marching home.
And we'll all feel gay, when Johnny comes marching home.
The old church bell will peal with joy, hurrah, hurrah,
To welcome home our darling boy, hurrah, hurrah;
The village lads and lassies say,
With roses they will strew the way,
And we'll all feel gay, when Johnny comes marching home.
Get ready for the jubilee, hurrah, hurrah,
We'll give the hero three times three, hurrah, hurrah,
The laurel wreath is ready now,
To place upon his loyal brow,
And we'll all feel gay, when Johnny comes marching home."
Arthur shows photos of his great grandfather Ernest Wagner.
