The Confederates cut off the sails of a Union sailing frigate (the USS Merrimac) and covered the ship with iron. They called their new ship the CSS Virginia. The Css Virginia was destroying the Union Naval fleet of wooden ships. The USS Monitor stopped the CSS Virginia and helped save the Union.
