NOAA, the Museum and Oliver Tilden Camp #26 have been working together since 1997 to  keep alive the memory  of  the Civil  War ironclad USS Monitor in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York where the USS Monitor  was  built.  The Museum received its New York  State Charter from the Board of Regents of  the University  of  the  State of  New  York in 1996.  In 2003 land was donated  to the Museum by Motiva Enterprises at the launch site of the USS Monitor in Greenpoint, Brooklyn at 56 Quay St., the  Bushwick  Inlet and the  East River.  As no remnants of the  original Continental Iron  Works remain, the Museum is  working  toward establishing a Museum building on this site.  At this time the Museum  has a classroom in PS110 the Monitor School where school  children visit and learn about  the Civil  War, the  USS Monitor and  Greenpoint's history.

Purpose
Unveiling of a USS Monitor Trail Marker by NOAA at launch site of  the Civil War Ironclad USS Monitor on the Museum’s land.   History Fair with displays, music, presentations at the Brooklyn Expo Center.

At this time NOAA is establishing a USS Monitor Trail marking the locations of historic importance to  the USS Monitor.   On May 29, 2015, NOAA will be unveiling a USS Monitor Trail Marker on the Museum's land along the launch site of the USS Monitor.  This is a historic waterfront event for  Greenpoint, Brooklyn and New York in that NOAA is creating a trail  linking the  historic sites of the  USS Monitor in New York,  Virginia, North Carolina.  The first marker has already been placed in Beaufort, North Carolina at the North Carolina Maritime Museum.  This location is near Duke University's Marine Lab.    John G. Newton of the Duke University Marine Laboratory proposed testing the application of geological survey equipment for underwater archaeological survey and assessment. The purpose of the project was to map and study a specific area of the continental shelf off the North Carolina coast. To assess the applicability of the equipment to underwater archaeology, the scientists proposed to locate and identify a specific shipwreck. The only easily identifiable vessel believed to have been lost in the survey area was the USS Monitor. It was Duke  University's research team that discovered the USS Monitor  in 1973.   Cathryn Newton, a member of this team and John G. Newton’s daughter is a professor at Syracuse University.  She will be one of the Exhibitors at the event.
