John introduces the Confederate Gray Uniform.

Students learn that there are many types of Civil War Uniforms
not just the Blue and Gray.

John telling the story of "Johnny Clem". Johnny ran away
from home in May 1861 to join the Union Army but found that
the army was not interested in 9 year old recruits. Being
persistent, Johnny tagged after the 22nd Michigan and acted
as a drummer boy. He finally wore down resistance. Though
still not regularly enrolled, he performed camp duties and
received a soldier's pay of $13 a month which was donated
by the officers. After the Civil War he tried to enter West Point
but was turned down because of his minimum education. He
stayed with the regular army and through a personal appeal
to President Ulysses S. Grant and his General he won a
2nd Lieutenant's appointment. He retired from the army
as a Major General in 1916.
